Pink Line Extension from Shiv Vihar to Mandola: What We Know, What It Means

Introduction

Delhi Metro’s Pink Line is among the longest metro corridors in the DMRC network, connecting Majlis Park in the north‑west to Shiv Vihar in Ghaziabad (Loni) in the north‑east. There has been growing demand and fresh administrative interest in extending this line further from Shiv Vihar to Mandola in Loni. This potential expansion promises better connectivity and relief for thousands of commuters, but many details are still under study.

Current Situation & Proposal Details

  • As of early 2025, Shiv Vihar is the current terminal station for the Pink Line in that direction.

  • Local residents and associations (RWAs, gram panchayat heads, traders) have repeatedly requested extending the Pink Line to Mandola Vihar housing scheme in Mandola, through Loni town.

  • The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has been asked by the UP Housing and Urban Planning Department to submit a report (a DPR / feasibility study) for this potential extension.
  • The estimated distance from Shiv Vihar to Mandola is about 8.7 to 10 km depending on alignment through Loni.

Administrative & Financial Aspects

  • The extension is not yet approved, but moves are underway to prepare the DPR (Detailed Project Report). GDA and DMRC are involved.

  • Preliminary cost estimates: this and other metro extensions in Ghaziabad (including Vaishali‑Mohan Nagar, Sector 62‑Sahibabad) together are being estimated at around ₹5,000 crore. The share specifically for Shiv Vihar‑Mandola is part of that package.

  • Funding is a key issue: state government support, inclusion of projects under central schemes/MoHUA (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs), and coordination between DMRC, the GDA, and UP state authorities are essential.

Potential Benefits

  • Improved connectivity for Loni: Many residents currently have to travel several kilometres to reach Shiv Vihar station. Extension to Mandola would bring station access closer.

  • Benefit for housing schemes: Mandola Vihar housing scheme residents would directly benefit.

  • Industrial areas: Commuters working in industrial or commercial zones in or around Tronica City may find travel easier.

  • Reduced traffic: With better last‑mile connectivity, some road traffic in Loni‑Shiv Vihar areas could decrease.

Challenges & What’s Unclear

  • Alignment & land acquisition: The exact route, number of stations between Shiv Vihar and Mandola, and whether the extension will be elevated, underground, or at grade are not yet defined.

  • Cost vs ridership: The DPR will need to show that projected ridership, fare revenue, and social benefits justify the investment.

  • Timeline: No official deadline or timeline has been publicly announced for completion; extension will depend on final approvals and availability of funds.

  • Funding sources: Whether central government, state government, or a combination will bear costs is yet to be settled.

Implications for Delhi Metro & Region

  • Extending the Pink Line to Mandola would strengthen the metro’s reach into the fringe areas of Ghaziabad, integrating more of the NCR.

  • It could spur real‑estate development, better public transport dependency, and reduced reliance on private vehicles in the Loni‑Mandola region.

  • It aligns with broader phase IV / phase V metro expansion goals in Delhi NCR where many corridors are being proposed, surveyed, and funded.

Conclusion

The prospect of extending the Pink Line from Shiv Vihar to Mandola is promising and much welcomed by residents. But as with many infrastructure projects, a lot depends on careful planning, validating benefits, securing funds, and then executing.
