PM Inaugurates 2,722 GPRA Flats in Delhi and Lays Foundation for 6,600 More: A Major Housing Upgrade

Delhi is witnessing a major transformation in government housing infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated thousands of new residential units for central government employees and launched additional projects that aim to modernize aging housing colonies in the capital.

The initiative is part of a large-scale redevelopment program designed to replace old government quarters with modern residential complexes while also creating commercial infrastructure to fund the projects.

PM Inaugurates 2,722 New GPRA Flats

The Prime Minister inaugurated 2,722 newly built General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) flats located in Kasturba Nagar and Sarojini Nagar in Delhi. The housing units are part of the Centre’s broader effort to improve living conditions for government employees and increase housing capacity in the capital.

During the event, the Prime Minister handed over the keys of the housing quarters to women allottees, marking the occasion of International Women’s Day. This symbolic gesture highlighted the government’s focus on women’s empowerment and recognition of women beneficiaries in public welfare programs.

The inauguration ceremony also included interactions with women construction workers involved in the project and women employees from NBCC, the public sector enterprise implementing parts of the redevelopment program.

Foundation Stone Laid for 6,632 Additional Flats

Alongside the inauguration, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for another 6,632 residential flats. These new housing units will be constructed across several major government residential colonies, including:

Netaji Nagar

Sarojini Nagar

Sriniwaspuri

Kasturba Nagar

The upcoming projects are expected to significantly expand the availability of housing for central government employees in Delhi.

Large-Scale Redevelopment of Government Housing Colonies

The newly inaugurated and upcoming housing units are part of the redevelopment of seven General Pool Residential Accommodation colonies in Delhi. Once completed, these redeveloped colonies will include 24,917 dwelling units in total, replacing around 12,970 older government housing units.

This redevelopment represents one of the biggest upgrades to central government staff housing in the national capital. The goal is to replace aging residential quarters with modern, high-density housing complexes equipped with improved infrastructure and amenities.

Self-Funding Redevelopment Model

The redevelopment project is being implemented by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) using a self-funding model. Under this approach, commercial developments are used to generate revenue that supports residential construction.

The National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), a public sector undertaking, plays a key role in this model by selling or leasing commercial properties developed as part of the project.

Some notable commercial developments associated with the redevelopment include:

World Trade Centre in Nauroji Nagar

Downtown commercial complex in Sarojini Nagar

Revenue from these projects helps finance the redevelopment of government housing colonies.

This redevelopment strategy follows a similar model previously used during the UPA government to modernize residential colonies such as East Kidwai Nagar and Moti Bagh.

Bharat Business Park: A New Commercial Hub

Another major highlight of the announcement was the Bharat Business Park, a modern commercial office complex being developed as part of the redevelopment plan.

The project will feature:

Approximately 217,000 square metres of commercial office space

World-class office infrastructure

Energy-efficient and sustainable building features

An estimated value of around ₹2,270 crore

The business park is expected to contribute significantly to Delhi’s commercial real estate landscape while supporting the funding model for residential redevelopment.

Interaction with Workers and Welfare Initiatives

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister engaged directly with women workers who participated in the construction of the housing projects. The event highlighted the contributions of women in the infrastructure and construction sectors.

Later in the day, while addressing a gathering in Burari, he also distributed:

PM-Ayushman Bharat cards

PM SVANidhi credit cards

These initiatives aim to provide healthcare support and financial assistance to beneficiaries, particularly those working in informal sectors.

Key Leaders Present at the Event

Several prominent leaders and officials attended the inauguration ceremony, including:

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena

Their presence highlighted the significance of the project for the city’s infrastructure development and housing sector.

What This Means for Delhi’s Urban Development

The redevelopment of government residential colonies represents a major step in modernizing Delhi’s urban infrastructure. The initiative aims to:

Replace outdated government housing with modern apartments

Increase housing capacity for central government employees

Develop high-quality commercial spaces in key areas

Generate revenue through a sustainable redevelopment model

By combining residential redevelopment with commercial projects, the government hopes to create a more efficient and modern housing ecosystem in the national capital.

Conclusion

The inauguration of 2,722 GPRA flats and the foundation for 6,632 additional units mark an important milestone in Delhi’s government housing redevelopment. With thousands of modern homes planned and large commercial projects such as the Bharat Business Park in development, the initiative is set to reshape several key residential colonies in the capital. As these projects progress, they are expected to improve housing infrastructure, enhance urban planning, and provide better living conditions for thousands of government employees in Delhi.
